What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that may provide health benefits. They come from the heart of plant, and their concentrated goodness can pack a powerful health punch.
Also, because the oils are so concentrated, a small amount goes a long way. The purer the oil, the longer it will last. Keep them away from direct sunlight and avoid getting them too hot or cold.
Because they are so potent, it’s vital to know how to use them properly and safely. While they have been in use for thousands of years, they are picking up steam in our modern society, and you want to use them in the best way to help your health.
Essential oils are also small molecules, and they are able to pass through the body’s blood brain barrier. Your sense of smell is connected directly to your limbic system, which plays an essential role in mood and memories. Essential oils are a medication-free way to influence and improve mood.
It’s important to get your oils from a company that you trust. Essentials oils in their purest form work best. So, it’s best to work with a company that tests the quality of its oils. Please consider finding a company that goes GC/MS testing (Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry) to verify the purity and quality of each oil.
I personally love Rocky Mountain Oils; you can check their GC/MS results of every batch with the number on each bottle! Young Living and DoTerra are two popular companies that people tend to have good results with.
How To Use Essential Oils
There are 4 main ways to use essential oils for your body’s health. They can be inhaled, diffused into the air in a mist, topically applied (usually in a carrier oil), and ingested.
You can also use them as cleaning products, for natural personal care items, and air fresheners! There are also great guidelines for using them with kiddos and pets.
Quick warning– if you plan to ingestion essential oils, please get food grade essential oils. It’s also recommended that you discuss this potential use with your holistic healthcare provider before ingestion, as they know your health and allergies and can advise you on the best things for you!
Can You Apply Essential Oils Directly To The Skin?
And How Do You Apply Essential Oils To The Skin?
Seriously, due to the potency of essential oils, please be careful!
It is usually recommended that you dilute the pure essential oil in a carrier oil before applying to your skin. Typical dilutions are one drop of essential oil to 3 or 4 drops of carrier oil (depends on where you get your oils from). For children, diluting it even further is usually advised.
Some oils are considered “hot,” which means that they cause a warming sensation to the skin. These oils tend to be better with a greater dilution (as in, use more carrier oil for the same amount of essential oil). This usually applies to oregano, thyme, clove bud, and cinnamon.
Popular carrier oils include:
- Coconut Oil
- Avocado Oil
- Apricot Oil
- Wheat Germ Oil
- Almond Oil
- Sesame Oil
- Cold-pressed Grapeseed Oil
- Jojoba Oil

Is It Safe To Use Essential Oils Every Day?
For most people, it’s fine to use essential oils every day. In fact, some essential oils companies actually recommend using oils every day to get the maximum health benefits from your oils!
Please consult YOUR holistic healthcare provider to be sure, as they know your medical history, medications and supplements, and current health level to advise you best.
