How Do You Start Trim Healthy Mama?

As a Trim Healthy Mama beginner, learning the THM plan sometimes feels like a big helping of alphabet soup– you’re looking for E’s, S’s, and FPs but not XO’s!

No worries– you’ve got this, friend!

If you want a full reference for the THM plan, here’s my (unoffical) THM Quick Start guide (and my story of losing all the baby weight in just 4 months!).

For a quick run down of how you start Trim Healthy Mama:

  • Meals start with protein
  • Add either healthy fats (for an S meal) or healthy carbs (for an E meal)
  • Add non-starchy vegetables
  • Focus on stable blood sugar levels

does Trim Healthy Mama work?

The short answer? Yes.

For many people, the Trim Healthy Mama diet has been a great way for them to lose weight and gain health.

It’s considered safe for diabetics because it focuses on healthy blood sugar levels.

Weight loss ideally comes from carb cycling, and leaving 3 hours in between the different types of meals.

I love THM because I lost 20 pounds of baby weight WHILE nursing in just 4 months and have tons of energy to keep up with my kids (and my skinny jeans fit!). You can check out my THM story here.

I was an integrative medicine physician assistant before I became a stay at home mom, and I also love THM it supports the adrenal glands and thyroid well.

Those parts of the body play a large role in weight loss, energy levels, and stress response, and they are neglected by other popular diets (here’s my concerns about the keto diet if you’re interested).

How To Start THM- The 5 Things a Trim healthy mama beginner REally Needs

1. A THM Book

Whether you purchase a copy or snag one from the library for a few weeks, having a THM book is the best way to get started with this plan.

There are 4 THM books, and they all have something different to offer. Three of them teach the plan:

  • The Original Trim Healthy Mama book– It’s being retired, so I’m not sure how much longer you’ll be able to buy it. It’s huge, but it covers the THM diet plan well. It also has many recipes that don’t include special ingredients, many of which did not exist when this book was written.
  • The Trim Healthy Mama Plan book— This one is a great place to learn ALL of the THM plan in a clear and comprehensive way. It goes into all the details of how to follow THM and has a bunch of meal plans (based off of recipes from the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook).
  • The first Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook-– This is JUST a cookbook, but it is full of yummy THM recipes. These recipes are used in the THM meal plans in the plan book listed above.
  • The second cookbook, Trim Healthy Table-– This is cookbook contains a short and sweet review of the THM plan in the first few chapters, and it’s full of delicious recipes and tips for making THM meals that are family-friendly.

2. Find a Sweetener You Like

If you like desserts, this one is a MUST. Lol, and I don’t know many people who want to stick to a diet that doesn’t have an desserts. 😉

Finding a sweetener that you enjoy is crucial to making this plan doable for the long run.

To keep blood sugar levels balanced, THM recommends using alternative sweeteners, like stevia, erythritol, xylitol, and monk fruit. People at goal weight (who aren’t diabetic) can use honey, coconut sugar, or maple syrup in small amounts if desired.

Please keep in mind that xylitol is toxic to dogs if they eat it so please, please, please keep it away from your fur babies!

Also, your taste buds may change in the first month or two as you detox from table sugar. So if you try some on plan sweeteners and don’t love them right away, consider having a taste test again a few weeks later.

I’ve been on plan for almost 6 years, and my personal favorites are:

  • THM stevia— VERY budget-friendly; I like it for my coffee and other drinks
  • Pyure— for baking; it lasts a long time and doesn’t leave a weird feeling on my tongue.

I personally use coconut sugar when baking for my tall, skinny, athletic husband and growing kiddos.

3. Write Out A Menu

I’m sure you’ve heard this before– “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

As you’re getting started with this new way of eating as a Trim Healthy Mama beginner, having a meal plan all written down for the first few weeks is crucial.

Write down your snacks, desserts, drinks, anything you can think of.

Even if you’re not hungry at snack time and don’t end up needing it, it’s better to be over prepared and have a plan than to have no plan and stare mindlessly into the pantry where some Cheezits might start calling to you (BTWs, they’re not on plan).

Here’s some of my fav THM meal plans below to give you some ideas.

Trim Healthy Mama Beginner Menus To Get You Started:

4. Take Measurements/Pictures

Seriously, I’m so so SO excited for you!

This is the beginning of an amazing journey, and in a few weeks/months, you will be SO glad that you took pictures and measurements at the beginning.

I would recommend doing both pics and measurements because sometimes people lose inches even when the scale isn’t moving.

These can be so encouraging along your journey, especially if the scale seems glitchy.

5. Find Your “thing”

What food thing is your “thing”? What sort of food makes you happy and needs to stay in your life?

Are you a snack-y gal and needs some chip-y thing in your life? On plan bread? Cupcakes?

Be aware of the food item that makes you happiest, and start looking for an on plan option that works for you.

Having your go-to happy food “THM’ified” can be an awesome way to keep you on plan and satisfied during your weight loss journey.

Personally, I’m a BREAD girl! 🙂 On of my first go-to items was finding my favorite bread (it’s the Sprouted Bread from Aldi). I also eat from E meals than S ones simply because I love carbs SO much.

And this was shortly followed by finding my favorite on plan cheesecake (it’s this one from Briana Thomas).

Get your bread or cracker ready for your amazing start to THM.

Bonus suggestion: Surround Yourself With Support
