Can probiotics help leaky gut?
Short answer: Yup.
Long answer: Yes.
Probiotics are a GREAT way to work on healing up leaky gut syndrome. When you have leaky gut, you usually have too much of the wrong bacteria in your gut.
It’s usually easiest to see an integrative or functional medicine provider and have your stool tested to know exactly which bad bacteria or pathogens are causing your gut issues. Then you can take something specific to get rid of those.
You also need to remove any foods that you’re sensitive to for a while (1-6 months depending on the severity of your IgG allergen levels for that food)
Then, you want to plant good bacterial strains back into your gut. And that’s where probiotics enter your leaky gut health plan (cue the superhero music :).
Does that have you wondering if you’ve got leaky gut? If so, this is for you…

Should I take probiotics everyday?
Yes and no.
Take them daily for a while during your season of healing up your gut.
For most people, this means a daily probiotic for 4-8 months (depending on the severity of your symptoms and how bad your food allergies are– you can test those HERE so you don’t have to keep guessing what you mught be allergic to).
Also, it’s SUPER important to rotate through different probiotics to plant different, healthy bacterial strains in the gut.
So, I usually have my patients take a certain probiotic for 1-2 months and then switch to a different one for variety and good gut health.
After several months, (usually 4-8) most people should NOT need probiotics on a daily basis.
You should incorporate amazing probiotic-rich foods (think fermented foods and you can check ’em all out here along with what to eat to beat leaky gut) into your daily diet.
And of course, you should add probiotics in during unusual circumstances, like stressful times (to support your gut when your adrenals might be stressed), when taking antibiotics (they can kill off both helpful and harmful bacteria at the same time), and travel to a foreign country.
The BEST Time To Take Probiotics
is at bedtime.
The probiotics implant better at bedtime, so take them right before you go to sleep.
Be warned– they tend to promote healthy, soft bowel movements first thing in the morning. For most people, this is a good thing (especially if you struggle with occasional constipation).
The goal for healthy bowel movements is 2-3 soft stools every day.
What is the best probiotic to take for leaky gut?
There are a lot of great brands, and 5 of my favorites (as a healthcare provider) are listed below.
Remember, as you’re healing up your leaky gut, please rotate through these best probiotic brands.
Take one brand for 1-2 months and than switch to a different brand. Start with a brand that contains Saccharomyces if you suspect that you might have a candida (yeast) overgrowth.
What To Look For In The Best Probiotic Brand For Leaky Gut
1. Blister Packs
Ideally, you want blister packs.
Blister packs reduce the probiotics’ exposure to light and moisture, both of which can decrease the efficacy of your probiotic.
Store them in a cool, dark, dry place to keep your probiotic at its most effective state. While most don’t have to be refrigerated, I tend to keep mine in the fridge.
2. Potential Added Goodies
- Glutamine- is an amino acid (protein building block) that is considered critical in healing up leaky gut. It’s the preferred food for the cells in your small intestines and colon, and it rapidly improves how well your intestinal barrier works.
- Prebiotics– this is the fiber that nourishes those good bacteria that you’re planting from the probiotics. It keeps them alive and thriving better.
Eighty percent of your immune system gets its start in your gut, so any probiotic you take has the potential to strengthen immune health.
Don’t be swayed by one probiotic brand over another simply because they promise to support your immune system. They all do! 🙂
Best Probiotic Brands for Leaky Gut
Dr. Ohhira’s probiotic is one of my favorite, general probiotics to start with. My patients have had great success towards healing up their leaky guts with this particular probiotic.
It’s composed of 12 different probiotic strains with 90 million CFUs (colony forming units) that come from vegetables that have been fermenting for up to 3 years. This gives you all kinds of probiotic goodness, including live cultures and post-biotic metabolites, to heal your gut up quickly.
Dr. Tobias Deep Immune Probiotics is a powerhouse for your gut. It has 4.4 billion CFUs and includes prebiotics to help with digestion and immune function. Dr. Tobias Probiotic also includes DE111, a spore forming probiotic bacteria that is not in most probiotics to populate your gut with additional healthy strains.
If you have an overgrowth of yeast, then taking a probiotic of Saccharomyces Boulardii should be in your probiotic rotation! Florastor, in particular, helps the body to produce healthy levels of IgA, a part of the immune system that protects the gut and gets especially disrupted by leaky gut. It also contains from prebiotic fiber from chicory root to feed the good bacteria that you’re planting in your gut.
Signs of yeast are numerous and can include bloated tummy (super-non specific, sorry!), white coating on your tongue, or fingernail or toenail fungal infection.
Garden of Life has a fantastic reputation for high-quality, non-GMO products, and you can include their probiotic in that list! With 100 billion CFUs from 34 food sources, this is a good probiotic to have on your rotation. It also includes prebiotic fiber and comes from raw food sources.
Standard Process is known for quality in the integrative medicine world (some holistic offices even private label Standard Process vitamins for their patients). This probiotic includes several strains of lactic acid bacteria (think lactobacillus) as well as Saccharomyces (fights against yeast overgrowth)– woot woot!
