It can be tough to lose the last 5 pounds! Here’s what I’m doing to change things up with THM and let those last 5 pounds melt off like butter, and I know they’ll work for you, too!
You are amazing!
You’ve been working hard, probably working out, and you are doing it, my friend! The weight has been coming off and you’re SO close to hitting your weight loss goals.
And you’re down to those pesky last 5-10 pounds. Sometimes, it feels like it can take the most effort to lose the last 5 pounds.
But we can do this, and we can do it together! We’ve put so much work into our weight loss journey, and we’re going to finish strong with these tweaks to lose the last 5 pounds.
I follow the Trim Healthy Mama diet (you can read all about my THM story of losing 20 pounds of baby weight in 4 months with nursing here), and weight loss has been tougher after my second baby.
I’ve needed to heal up from postpartum depression and adrenal fatigue, and slowly and surely the weight has been coming off. But I’ve needed to change things up to lose those last 5 pounds, and it’s paying off!
Check out these easy 5 tweaks to help you lose the last 5 pounds and slide right into your skinny jeans.

How To Lose the Last 5 Pounds
1. Focus On The Basics
Keep doing what’s working, but be sure that you’re really doing all the details of your weight loss diet plan.
After you’ve been losing weight for a while, it can be easy to get a little slack with the details (check out #5 on this list, too!).
When you want to lose the last 5 pounds, it’s time to tighten up your eating and make sure that you’re actually doing the plan right.
For me, with Trim Healthy Mama, it means these 3 things…
- Separate the Fuels
This is the basic premise of THM– low glycemic index foods and separating your fuels.
In my 5+ years on plan with THM, I’ve been pregnant, nursing, or at goal weight for over 80% of the time. And that means that I’ve been able to indulge in Crossovers (not weight loss friendly) meals A LOT.
Plus, I often eat at the 2-2.5 hour mark (leftover from pregnancy and hungry nursing mama days).
To lose the last 5 pounds, I’ve needed to embrace the basics of the THM plan and enjoy pure S and E meals with 3 hours in between my meals.
- Reread the Books
Head back to your THM books and brush up on the details.
Maybe you’re doing too many heavy S instead of mixing it up with lighter S meals, too. Maybe it’s time to become BFFs with fuel pulls.
You might even find it inspiring to read a different THM book if you haven’t read them all yet:
- The Original THM Book- It was written before most of their special ingredients existed, and I love Serene and Pearl’s real life menus
- The THM Plan Book– perfect for brushing up on the details and staying inspired!
- The THM Cookbook- so many yummy recipes that I use every day (especially the Green Fries recipe and the one for Kale Chips– I didn’t know I could crave green beans or eat kale like potato chips!)
- Trim Healthy Table- tons of easy, healthy recipes (the magic caramel cupcakes are ah-mazing super cheap and easy to make!), plus a quick, easy plan review in the first 3 chapters
Sometimes getting back to the basics helps us tweak our diet and lose the last 5 pounds.
- Check the Ingredients
You never know what sneaky ingredients might be in your packaged goods.
To lose the last 5 pounds, crack down on reading labels and checking ingredients. Make sure you’re not letting any sneaky sugars or hidden off plan ingredients slink into your daily diet.
2. Eat More Veggies… and Make It A Game!
“Eat more veggies” has been the cry of the diet world for decades.
But It Works.
And here’s the easy way that I’m making it work in my own kitchen– I’ve turned it into a game!
I just started using Misfits Market, and they’re perfect for playing the Eat More Veggies Game.
Misfits Market sells organic and sometimes irregularly shaped produce at a reduced rate. It’s organic produce for Aldi’s prices. My favorite– organic food for the price of regular stuff!
I feel like a little kid opening my weekly veggie box, packed with produce surprises.
And the win comes when I use up all the produce while it’s still at its peak. It’s been a fun way to challenge myself to get creative with my veggies and I’ve been eating more veggies (and losing weight) so I can win the game.
You can play the Veggies Game, too! Save on your first box of Misftis Market with my refer-a-friend link here.
3. Get Some Exercise
Exercise has always helped me to lose weight. My body seems to like it when I move around and break a sweat, and yours might need that, too, to lose the last 5 pounds!
If you’re not already exercising, you might want to start slow with walking or gentle yoga and gradually build up.
If you’re recovering from something (like me with adrenal fatigue), don’t push yourself to the point of exhaustion, which can make recovery worse.
Personally, I started with walking for 20 minutes 3 times a week. Then I added the first 10 minutes of a THM Workins dvd twice a week. As I’ve gotten stronger, I’m running 20 minutes 2-3 times a week, and doing the full 20 minute Workins 2 times a week.
And I’m losing those pesky 5 pounds!
You may already be up and exercising. If so, keep it up, and add a twist to keep your body guessing!
Consider adding Tabata intervals to increase speed and create some high intensity intervals or start rebounding or jump roping (quick but awesome for boosting energy and burning fat).
4. A Simple Switch- Coconut Oil For Butter
I know it sounds weird, but this seems to really work for me!
I switch out unrefined coconut oil for butter wherever I can.
Unrefined coconut oil is great for revving up the metabolism (some people even notice that they get warmer after eating it due to that increased thermogenic burn).
I’m even using this delicious Salted Caramel MCT Oil powder as my yummy morning coffee creamer to get more coconut oil in and burn more fat.
MCT Oil is the medium chain triglycerides extracted from coconut oil, and they’re awesome for feeding your brain and burning fat. And salted caramel is a fun way to get it in every day!
5. Stop The Snack-y Cheats!
Oh, yeah… I’m going there! (exclamation point and everything!)
I don’t know about you, but when I’ve been on a diet for a while and am seeing success, it’s easy to feel like a bite of off plan “cheat stuff” here and there doesn’t matter.
While a bite or two might alone might not matter, what matters is that it’s really easy for this to become a habit.
Instead of just “a bite or two,” it quickly becomes a bite or two every meal and snack. And then I realize I have my hand in the bag of chips… again. 😛
So, just stop.
Stop the little snack-y cheat bites here and there, and see if that helps your body to release the weight.
You CAN Lose the Last 5 Pounds
You’re gonna do this, and it’s going to be awesome. Some day soon, you’re going to dancing around the dressing room at TJ Maxx in that dress that’s one size smaller.
I can’t wait to hear about!
